Founded in 1952 by Masataka Taketsuru in Hokkaido, Nikka is now a subsidiary of Asahi Brewing and the second largest whiskey producer in Japan. Taketsuru, whose family has run its own sake distillery in Japan since 1733, emigrated to Scotland in 1918 to study chemistry at the University of Glasgow. During his studies, he worked in a nearby whiskey distillery. The art of distilling whisky fascinated the young student so much that he decided to export it to his native Japan to make his fortune, and he was successful. Taketsuru created his first own brand in 1940 and finally made his big breakthrough in the 1960s after winning several awards. Nikka whisky is characterised in particular by its fruity character and balanced taste with a long finish. For his production, the master distiller combined outstanding whiskies from the Nikka Group distilleries to create a creation with a stunningly complex flavour. The Japanese single malt from the Miyagikyo distillery in the north of Honshu benefits from its 18 years of maturation in the selected remade oak hogshead. It makes it complex and harmonious at the same time and is a fine, almost admirable Japan single malt whisky. It demonstrates the classic Japanese art of creating both a clear and precise flavour and great intensity - this single malt bottling shows Miyagikyo's velvety-soft style at its best.
The exquisite Nikka Miyagikyo single cask whiskies are recognised by connoisseurs as consistently superior and an exclusive expression for connoisseurs, discerning whisky collectors and lovers of fine old Japanese whiskies.
