This special and limited edition vintage 1990 23 year old Ben Nevis Highland single malt Scotch whisky was bottled from cask no. 2 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Ben Nevis distillery under the management of Nikka Whisky Distilling Company Limited of Japan. After extensive modernisation and installation of a new mash tun and additional equipment, the removal of two blocks of four fermenters, the distillery resumed production on 28th September 1990.
The first bottling from this new production and with the official reopening on 28th September 1990, Mr H. Yamashita was also present and purchased cask no. 2. He later became President of the Nikka Corporation, retiring from this position in 2012, but continued as a director of the Ben Nevis distillery. This particular cask was supplied by Kinnaairds cooperage in Edinburgh as a freshly prepared dump hogshead, the wood sourced from new bourbon casks imported directly from the USA. The fresh Bourbon dump hogshead with cask no. 2 was filled with new make and 71.4% vol., matured for 23 years in Ben Nevis warehouse no. 5 on larch wood rails and bottled on 9th June 2014 at cask strength 56.4% vol. in an edition of only 227 bottles. Each bottle was numbered by hand and bears the signature of the Managing Director.
