Ootori 15 Years Japanese Premium Blended Whisky 40.0% Vol. by Mercian Corporation - a rare old Japanese premium blended whisky from the Karuizawa and Kawasaki distilleries!
The rare 15-year-old Ootori Japanese Premium Whisky comes from the Karuizawa Distillery, which was founded by a wine company (Mercian Corporation) and is one of the legendary whisky distilleries in Japan. The Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 by Daikoku-Budoshu, who had previously worked in the wine industry. In 1958, the import of malt for the newly built distillery began from Scotland. In 1962, the distribution company Ocean Co Ltd and its whisky brand Ocean were taken over by Mercian Co Ltd and the name was changed from Mercian to Sanraku Ocean. 1971 the firing of the stills was switched from coal to gas. 1985 shortening of the company name from Sanraku Ocean to Sanraku. 1990 return to the company name Mercian Co. Ltd. 1991 the old fermentation vats are replaced as part of the modernisation process. Falling demand for whisky forces Mercian Co. Ltd. to temporarily close the Karuizawa distillery in 2001. In 2007, Kirin Holding took over Mercian Co. Ltd. and decided to demolish the Karuizawa distillery. Like almost all Karuizawa distillates, the 15 years Ootori Japanese Premium Whisky was first matured in charred oak casks and then in former sherry and/or wine casks. Ootori is Japanese and means something like 'mystical bird' in German.
The 15 years Ootori Japanese Premium Whisky is a blended whisky with an impressively sweet, rich and fruity bouquet. On the palate, it also tastes sweet with flavours of pureed bananas, oranges, limes and cereals. The finish is long-lasting with notes of nutmeg and orange chocolate.
Only a few bottles of this exclusive 15 years Ootori Japanese Premium Whisky have found their way to Europe and these are now coveted rarities among connoisseurs, discerning whisky collectors and lovers of exceptional Japanese whiskies and are rarely found today.
