Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with a fabulous 69.05% vol. and the 15th release from the legendary Buffalo Trace Antique Collection - a special rarity, almost no longer available today and a multiple award-winning Bourbon Whiskey.
George T. Stagg was born December 19, 1835, in Garrard County, Kentucky. While little is known of his early years, the impact his adult life had on the bourbon industry was quite impressive. Working as a whiskey salesman in St. Louis, he had the good fortune of teaming up with bourbon icon E.H. Taylor, Jr. Together they built the most dominant American distillery of the 19th century. A leading industry expert at the time declared the Distillery one plus ultra of its class, the best of the best. Stagg s salesmanship and financial acumen helped build the Distillery into one of the world s leading bourbon producers. In 1904, the Distillery was rechristened to bear Stagg s name, a title that was maintained for nearly a century. Today, Buffalo Trace Distillery strives to carry on the tradition of innovation and excellence of one of its famous forefathers. In 2000, the Distillery was honored with the prestigious Distillery of the Year designation by Whisky Advocate, the culmination of Stagg s work, begun nearly 150 years ago.
George T. Stagg built the most dominant American distillery of the 19th century, during a time known as the Gilded Age of Bourbon. The George T. Stagg Spring 2014 has been produced in response to consumer requests for a well-aged and barrel strength whiskey. This extremely hearty whiskey ages in new charred oak barrels for no less than 16 years and comes to us from a long slumber in Buffalo Trace s Warehouses C, H, I, K, L, P, and Q. Straight out of the barrel, uncut and unfiltered, the taste is powerful, flavorful and intense. Uncut and unfiltered, this robust bourbon whiskey ages for more than 16 years and 4 months and boasts the bold character that is reminiscent of the man himself. This batch was distilled in the spring of 1998, which makes it officially 16 years old, but at least 17 summers old. This bourbon was named Worlds Best North American Whiskey at the World Whiskies Awards 2013 and was 2010 Bourbon of the Year at Jim Murrays Whisky Bible. George T Stagg is of course the flagship release in the annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. - Aroma: Dark fruits of raisin and figs. Old wood, wood polish. A little musty. Dark caramel. Deep, dark, and old.
- Palate: Lots of sweetness and alcohol heat up front. Fruity. Thick syrupy. Resiny wood and tannins make for a nice thick mouthfeel. Char lingers in the finish. With a little water I get a bunch more caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon spice up front that the heat may have been hiding along with chocolate and coffee. Still has some heat.
- Finish: The tannic bitterness transitions back to sweet. Caramel and burnt brown sugar come into play once again. The alcohol burn lingers in the back of your throat, which hides the flavors a little bit in the finish.
