The excellent Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the second edition in the famous Glenmorangie Private Collection series, which is particularly popular with connoisseurs and collectors and presents rare and limited editions of Glenmorangie. Sonnalta is the Gaelic translation of the English word generous. PX stands for the sherry casks chosen for the finish, which were imported from Pedro Ximenez in Spain. Pedro Ximenez sherry casks give the whisky intense notes of sultanas and syrup. After the whisky has been matured for 10 years in American white oak bourbon casks, the Glenmorangie Sonnalta Scotch Whisky is transferred to Spanish ex-Pedro Ximenez (PX) casks for its final two-year extra maturation.
This rare wood, often described as the king of sherry casks, was brought back from Jerez in Spain by Dr Bill Lumsden. Few distillery managers experiment with wooden casks as meticulously as Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie. In the course of his career at the distillery in the northern Highlands of Scotland, many whiskies have been created in this way that are just waiting to be made available to connoisseurs all over the world. After a long maturation in the best ex-bourbon casks, it is extra matured in Pedro Ximénez casks of the very highest quality. The colour is an outstanding feature: as dark as only a few single malts and the sweetness is also typical: aromas of dried sultanas and chocolate, ripe plums, sweet berries and honey are already noticeable when nosing, followed by fireworks when enjoying: particularly full flavour but still not too sweet with lots of fruit and the roasted aromas are clearly noticeable. Despite the extra maturing in the cask from which one of the sweetest wines in the world comes, the Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX presents itself as a balanced single malt whisky in which not only the connoisseur can recognise the signature of one of the greatest perfectionists in the world of Scottish malts. A true jewel from Glenmorangie, a highlight for lovers of exceptional Scotch whiskies and now only rarely available!
