Born in 1973, Bak Chiang graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1995 and studied at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China, in 1997. He was awarded the First Prize in the Chinese Painting category in the 19th and 22nd United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Competitions (2000 and 2003 respectively). In 2002 he received the Young Artist Award from the National Arts Council of Singapore.
Tay Bak Chiang paints subjects found in the nature of Singapore and Southeast Asia, such as heliconias, lotus ponds and rocks. He seeks to reinterpret them in terms of form, composition, technique, material and colour. Lotus flowers, for example, are depicted as minimalist forms in bold hues; lotus stalks as thick, unembellished black strokes; and stones as textured shapes and sculptural blocks in intense colours made by combining pigment and traditional Chinese ink. Through these subjects, he expresses his sentiments and philosophies.
The Hanyu distillery was originally a family business and was founded in 1626 by the Akuto family. They were originally sake producers in the village of Chichibu. Isouji Akuto, the 19th generation of the Akuto family built a plant to produce alcohol in 1941 in the town of Hanyu, northwest of Tokyo. A licence for production was granted in 1946. In 1980, two stills were installed and serious attempts began to produce a Scotch-style whisky. At that time, consumers mainly demanded blended whisky, but this has since shifted more clearly towards malt whisky. In 1990, the first Chichibu whisky was launched by Hanyu, named after the place where sake was originally produced. Ownership changed and the new management decided to get rid of the maturing whiskies and distilling equipment. Fortunately, a sake producer from northern Japan, Sasanokawa Shuzo, decided to save the Hanyu distillery and took over the whiskies and equipment at this critical time. Eventually, Ichro Akuto, grandson of the founder of the Hanyu distillery, founded a new company called Venture Whisky and started producing malt whisky again.
