The Karuizawa distillery was a small distillery in Karuizawa which produced first class malt whiskeys and was established in 1955 in the foothills of Mount Asama, an active volcano north-west of Tokyo, to make single malt whisky in as tradional manner as possible. At 850 metres above sea level, the distillery is the highest in Japan, low temperatures and high humidity provide an ideal micro-climate for whisky production. Karuizawa whiskeys are noted for their floral scent and maturity making them a highly sought after products. In former times the company produced pharmaceuticals and chemicals as well as alcoholic beverages. Later however started focusing solely on alcoholic beverages. The Karuizawa distillery was in operation from 1955 to November 2011, it was however completely closed down in 2012.
