The rare and terrific Karuizawa Spirit of Asama Japanese Single Malt Whisky 55.0% vol. from the final vintage edition is a multi-vintage vatted malt containing single malt whisky from 77 hand selected European sherry casks from the last years of production 1999 and 2000 of the closed cult distillery Karuizawa in the heart of the Japanese main island and was bottled by Number One Drinks Company in 2012 for The Whisky Exchange in a limited edition.
Karuizawa is without question one of the legendary whisky distilleries in Japan today. In 1955, the Karuizawa distillery was built by Daikoku-Budoshu, who until then had been in the wine trade. In 1958, the malt for the newly built distillery began to be imported from Scotland. In 1962, Mercian Co Ltd took over the distribution company Ocean Co Ltd with its whisky brand Ocean and the name was changed from Mercian to Sanraku Ocean. In 1971, the firing of the stills was changed from coal to gas. 1985 the company name is shortened from Sanraku Ocean to Sanraku. 1990 return to the company name Mercian Co Ltd. 1991 The old fermenting vats are replaced in the course of modernisation. Falling market demand for whisky forced Mercian Co. Ltd. to temporarily close the Karuizawa distillery in 2001. In 2007, Kirin Holding takes over Mercian Co. Ltd. and decides to demolish the Karuizawa distillery. In 2011, the English One Drinks Company Ltd., which specialises in the import of Japanese whisky, buys up the distillery's last existing 365 casks and starts bottling and selling single casks in small editions and a few bottlings.
