The rare 12-year-old Macallan Ghillies Dram Estate Limited Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky belongs to the Sherry Oak series, which formed the standard range alongside the Fine Oak series. After its 12 years of maturation in former fino and oloroso sherry casks from Jerez, this special limited edition Macallan single malt was bottled at 40.0% vol.
This 12 year old Macallan is one of only 800 individually numbered bottles and comes with a limited edition Beat River Spey map showing the local fishing spots and a fishing bag with two flies for catching salmon. The back of the bottle is hand signed by the Macallan Estate Ghille, Willie Bremner. Willie Bremner is the Macallan Estate Ghillie whose job it is to manage the Macallan fishing estate on the River Spey. The stated aim of this bottling is to support the recovery of fish stocks in the Spey, which is somewhat at odds with the free gift of two fly fishing lures that accompany the bottle.
A truly fabulous dram from Macallan and with its voluminous, heavily sherried style, there is no more widely recognised malt than The Macallan. Matured in exquisite sherry casks, the 12 year old Macallan is one of the best whiskies in its class and provides a perfect interplay of sherry, malt, light smokiness, vanilla and toffee notes, with a dryness, roundness and depth all its own. A malt with lush, bold, clear tones from aroma to finish. Macallan still uses the rare ministrel barley variety Golden Promise, which has been abandoned by other distilleries as it is considered too difficult and expensive to grow, but its rich natural oiliness allows the whiskey to mature for a particularly long time. The Macallan, on the other hand, believes it is just right for the rich and sensual character of The Macallan whisky. The water, an important raw material for whisky production, comes from the estate's own spring and is fresh, natural and without any flavour of its own. The oily consistency allows for long maturation in oak casks. This exclusive Macallan single malt was matured exclusively in selected sherry casks from Jerez in Spain and its dark colour, complex aroma and heavy flavour distinguish this exceptional single malt whisky and rightly make it the Rolls-Royce among whiskies. This was more than impressively confirmed at the renowned auction house Sotheby's in Hong Kong with the sale of one of four The Macallan M in the 6-litre decanter version and sales proceeds of around €462,000 - the new world record as the most expensive whisky in the world, rare old bottlings now usually fetch well over €50,000 and vintages from previous years are becoming increasingly rare. This rare and special Macallan Ghillies Dram Estate Limited Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with the small edition brought with lot number 541 at the renowned auction house Christie's in the auction of 27 March 2014 already a selling price of £ 823, about 1150 EURO.
