Founded in 1952 by Masataka Taketsuru in Hokkaido, Nikka is now a subsidiary of Asahi Brewing and the second largest whisky producer in Japan. Taketsuru, whose family has run its own sake distillery in Japan since 1733, emigrated to Scotland in 1918 to study chemistry at the University of Glasgow. During his studies, he worked in a nearby whisky distillery. The art of whisky distilling fascinated the young student so much that he decided to export it to his native Japan to make his fortune, and he was successful. Taketsuru created his first own brand in 1940 and finally made his big breakthrough in the 1960s after winning several awards. Nikka whisky is characterised in particular by its fruity character and balanced taste with a long finish. For its production, the master distiller combined outstanding whiskies from the Nikka Group distilleries to create a creation with a stunningly complex flavour. Nikka Japanese Whisky is now an insider tip among connoisseurs, and once you have tried it, you will never want to do without it again.
