A rare vintage 1967 40 year old Tomtin Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled on 24th November 1967 and after more than 40 years of maturation in a refill butt with cask no. 17904, bottled on 12th November 2008 as a limited single cask bottling exclusively for Germany without added colouring or chill filtration in an edition of only 463 individually numbered bottles at cask strength 49.3% vol.
The history of the distillery dates back to the 15th century, when cattle traders and drovers obtained their whisky from a distillery in the Old Laird's House on the site of the present distillery. The distillery was then legalised by official incorporation in 1897. In 1906 it went bankrupt, but was reopened in 1909. Until 1956, it was one of the smaller distilleries with two stills. At that time, two stills were added. Then in 1958, two more were added. In 1961, four stills were added again and in 1964, another was added. This made Tomatin the only Scotch whisky distillery with an odd number of stills, at least for a short time. In 1974, three more stills were added and the distillery's own maltings were closed down; since then, the malt has been sourced from Glen Ord Maltings. At that time, Tomatin was the largest Scottish distillery with an annual output of 12 million litres of alcohol. In 1985, Tomatin was again insolvent and was taken over in 1986 by the Japanese investors Takara Shuzo Co. and Okara Co. who installed a further nine stills. Takara Shuzo Co. and Okara & Co. thus became the first Japanese owners of a Scotch whisky distillery. Since 1998, the distillery has traded under the name Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd. In terms of output, it was at times one of the top ten distilleries in Scotland. Today, Tomatin concentrates exclusively on high-quality single malts.
