Willett XCF Exploratory Cask Finish Rare Release Small Batch American Rye Whiskey 51.7% Vol. finished in Curacao Casks from France - limited Rare Release 1.0 and unique bottling of an extraordinary Willett Rye Whiskey!
The first edition of the special limited release of the Willet XCF Exploratory Cask Finish Small Batch American Rye Whiskey was distilled at LDI in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and was matured in Willett's old warehouses in Bardstown. The exceptional Willett Small Batch Rare Release Rye Whiskey was distilled on 12th April 2006, matured for 7 years in American new white oak barrels and then finished for a further 90 days in French Curacao casks. It was bottled in the year 2013 without the addition of colourants and chill-filtration at barrel strength 51.7% vol / 103.4 proof in a limited edition of 6912 bottles.
The story gets a little more interesting and now drifts over to Europe. During a trip to France, Willett Master Distiller and Blender Drew Kulsveen had an opportunity to see how the orange liqueur known as Curacao was made. The barrels that were used to age the citrus-flavored spirit were actually used Bourbon barrels, which was a factor for Drew believing they may produce a nice barrel finish for some of the Rye he had aging. So after bringing 25 of the Curacao casks from France back to Kentucky, Drew and his team needed 42 barrels of the 7 year-old Rye to fill them up (remember, after 7 years of aging those barrels were not full due to angel's share/evaporation) and allowed the whiskey to age for another 90 days inside those barrels. After three months the barrels were all dumped together and bottled as a small batch, sticking to Willett's philosophy of bottling small batches at 20-25 barrels. This yielded 6,912 bottles, which might sound like a lot, but considering Willett is now in 35 states and 25 countries, this release is very highly allocated.
With its experimental finish in exquisite French Grand Marnier Curacao casks, Willett has created a special rye whiskey with a nose of fine orange flavours with light notes of rye, oak, menthol, eucalyptus and a taste of oranges with fresh wood, sugar and a balanced blend of citrus and rye.
Willett Rare Release Rye and Straight Bourbon whiskeys are now regarded as absolutely excellent by connoisseurs and collectors worldwide and are among the most sought-after whiskeys on the market today.
