The Yamazaki distillery near Kyoto is the oldest Japanese whisky distillery still in operation and was opened in 1923 by Torii Shinjiro as the first malt whisky distillery in Japan. The Yamazaki Valley on Mount Tennozan on the island of Honshu was the birthplace of Japanese whisky in 1923. The company founder and chairman of Kotobukiya (the predecessor company of Suntory) wanted to produce a whisky to be taken seriously and therefore hired Taketsuru Masataka, whom he appointed factory director of the Yamazaki distillery in 1924. He had previously travelled to Scotland to learn how Scotch whisky was made there. Under Taketsuru, production of the first whisky was completed in 1929, which was marketed as shirofuda (white label). Due to differences between Torii and Taketsuru, Taketsuru left the company in 1934 and later established NIKKA WHISKY in Hokkaido. The main reason for choosing the location of the company's headquarters was the outstanding water quality of the area, called minaseno. Furthermore, the location at the foot of Mount Tenno and the proximity of the confluence of three rivers (Katsura-gawa, Kizu-gawa, Uji-gawa) creates a special climate that is characterised above all by very high humidity.
The outstanding work of the Yamazaki distillery was honoured in 2014 with an accolade from Jim Murray: for the first time, a renowned British expert has awarded the accolade for the world's best whisky to Japan. The Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 achieved an impressive score of 97.5 out of a possible 100 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2014, making it one of the best whiskies in the world.
