A great Ardbeg Kelpie Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled for Feis Ile 2017 and Ardbeg day in a limited edition without added colouring or chill filtration at 46.0% vol. The Ardbeg Kelpie limited 2017 edition Islay single malt Scotch whisky was named after a Scottish water spirit and shapeshifter from Celtic mythology, who are said to be at mischief around Ardbeg. The mystical creature from the Scottish mythological world is said to resemble a horse, its skin is said to resemble that of a seal, and it is said to be soft and cold like death. According to legend, kelpies can also change their shape to lure people into a trap and death.
A part and the heart of the Ardbeg Kelpie Islay Single Malt was allowed to mature in special and new European oak casks from the Black Sea region and the North Caucasian Republic of Adygea, respectively, where they make casks for storing wine from the local oak wood in an old craft tradition, such casks have been used very rarely so far. The rest was blended with the classic bourbon casks matured 10-year-old Ardbeg Islay single malt.
The result is an Ardbeg Islay Single Malt Scotch whisky that needs time and slowly reveals its secret. The Ardbeg Kelpie Islay Single Malt Scotch whisky shows on the nose wonderful and strong peat smoke, sea salt, dark chocolate, smoked fish, seaweed, an intense herbal note, butterscotch and spicy pepper, the flavour is fruity and peppery with coffee, smoked bacon, lots of dark chocolate, peach and fine wood, the finish is very long and dry with strong flavours of burnt wood, tar, peat and toffee that lingers in the mouth for a long time - a classic and yet unique Ardbeg Islay Single Malt Scotch whisky!
