This 20 years Barterhouse Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey from the Orphan Barrel Distilling Co. is a bourbon in a class of its own and comes from a series of bottles coming from barrels of bourbon discovered from abandoned or forgotten rickhouses and distilleries.
According to information available to date, the 20 years Barterhouse Orphan Barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey was made using barrels from the production of the old Bernheim distillery in Louisville, which were brought to the Stitzel-Weller distillery just a few miles away for further storage after the merger of Guinness United Distillers and Grand Metropolitan to form Diageo. The Stitzel-Weller distillery closed in 1994, but the warehouses had plenty of extra space for barrels. The barrels that Diageo took from Bernheim were most likely intended for use in IW Harper products. Due to a lack of demand, some of the barrels were allowed to continue maturing and ageing at Stitzel-Weller.
The surplus barrels could not be used for other Diageo products as they had too low a rye content, but were also too valuable to be used in the blended whiskey brands and they did not fulfil the specifications of a Tennessee whiskey, which also meant that they could not be used in George Dickel products. Orphan Barrel Distilling in Tullahoma was then founded by Diageo in 2013 for marketing purposes and in 2014 the first batch of 20 years Barterhouse Orphan Barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey was hand bottled and sold out within a short space of time.
The 20 years Barterhouse Orphan Barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey is pleasing and sweet on the nose with vanilla, buttercream, notes of oak and cherries, the flavour is harmonious and fruity with sweet cherries, dry oak, caramel, vanilla, the finish is smooth and short and perfectly balanced with sweet notes - a remarkable Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey!
This 20 years Barterhouse Orphan Barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey from the Bernheim distillery is a special piece of whiskey history in a limited edition and a rare expression of a fine Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey that is now rare to find.
