This very rare vintage 1989 23 year old Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey was distilled on 16th May 1989, matured for over 23 years in a 135 gallon French oak wine barrel and bottled on 27th June 2012 with no added colouring at 45.0% vol. Stored in Warehouse K on Floor l, this over 23 year old Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Single Barrel Whiskey displays complex flavours and is full-bodied with hints of sassafras, caramel and birch.
American whiskey is normally matured in 53-gallon oak barrels, but this whiskey was matured for 23 years in 135-gallon barrels. The barrel was crafted from French oak and had previously contained some sort of wine. The exact type of wine
was lost in the records. Furthermore, these giant barrels underwent a #3 char, varying from Buffalo Trace's typical #4 char.This experiment was a multi-layered investigation into the crafting bourbon. Only one 135-gallon barrel of this particular deep bronze-coloured bourbon whiskey was bottled as the 11th release of the Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection in the year 2012.
This Buffalo Trace Giant French Oak Barrel Bourbon Whiskey is now one of the particularly rare rarities from the Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection, is absolutely unique with its exceptional maturation and is virtually impossible to find.
For more than two decades, Buffalo Trace has been experimenting with recipes and different processes to explore the effects of whiskey maturation and taste. Currently, there are more than 4,000 experimental barrel whiskeys of different ages in the warehouses of Buffalo Trace. Each of the barrels has unique characteristics and experimental changes in the mash calculation, wood species, barrel toasts and more. The experimental whiskey is periodically bottled and is available in limited quantities as a small limited edition, and the label contains all the facts about this unique whiskey. Due to the small available quantity, they are filled in bottles with 375ML content. These special Bourbon whiskeys from Buffalo Trace of the Experimental Collection are only delivered to a few selected dealers in the USA, are almost unavailable in Europe and are one of the absolute rarities among bourbon lovers and connoisseurs even at the special auctions of Bonhams, Krüger or Christies.
