Caroni 1993 26 Years The Beast S.B.S Single Barrel Selecttion Full Proof Trinidad Rum 50.7% Vol. - limited and rare bottling of a polarising Full Proof Single Cask Trinidad Rum from the closed cult distillery Caroni!
An extreme and rare vintage 1993 26 year old Caroni Column Still Full Proof Single Cask Trinidad Rum and the 1st release of The Beast by the Danish bottler 1423 World Class Spirits from the 1423 S.B.S Single Barrel Selection Rum series, which is well known among connoisseurs. This Caroni Full Proof Single Cask Trinidad Rum was distilled in a column still at the Caroni distillery in the year 1993 and matured for 26 years in an oak barrel before being bottled in March 2019 in a limited edition of just 239 bottles with no added sugar or colouring and without chill filtration at cask strength 50.7% vol.
1423 World Class Spirits was founded in 2008 by a group of whisky enthusiasts at a whisky fair in Denmark, who were impressed by a rum on offer at a small stand, started to delve deeper into the subject and began searching for casks. In the year 2009, the first own bottling of a Trinidad rum was presented. The young entrepreneurs then called this rum 1423, a name which later became the company name. Today, S.B.S stands for Single Barrel Selection and, as the name suggests, these are carefully selected single barrel bottlings with a limited number of bottles, which have not been blended and whose versatility and quality ensure exquisite flavour and enjoyment.
The Caroni distillery is said to have been founded in 1918, but there are several historical references to distillation having taken place there earlier in the 20th century. In 1936, it became part of the Tate and Lyle company, which used it as a base for expanding its eventually substantial sugar operations in Trinidad. Caroni was an important part of the British Navy s rations, where its famous high-proof heavy rums provided the signature flavour. With the decline of the Trinidadian sugar industry, Tate and Lyle sold a 51% majority stake to the government in 1970 before the company was fully nationalised in 1975. Although the newly formed Caroni (1975) Ltd. was able to supply itself with molasses, it continued to make losses for the next 25 years until the government attempted to minimise its stake by selling 49% of its shares, just enough to retain control. Angostura was the preferred bidder, but a dispute over the value of Caroni s stock cancelled the deal and and Caroni was finally closed in 2003 and a true giant of flavour was lost to the world.
The unconventional vintage 1993 26 years Caroni S.B.S Single Barrel Selection Trinidad Rum was given the addition The Beast on the bottle label for a reason, as it is without question a rum of extremes and not for the faint-hearted, as it captivates and overwhelms! Visually and in the glass, Caroni Rum from 1993 is more reminiscent of a bitter than a rum. The almost black color gives a good indication of the influence of the barrel on this rum. The tropical maturation until 2008 has left a significant mark on this rum and left heavy traces, the Caroni The Beast is not a rum for cosy evenings by the fireplace, but rather for the workshop pit or pit lane, it smells dirty of junkyard, wood varnish, some tar, burnt rubber, menthol, mint, lots of wood, fresh sugar cane juice, a hint of caramel and fresh rubber. On the palate it is very concentrated, woody, bitter with wood and a menthol/mint note and seems to be 15 years past its zenith, but this is probably not due to the ageing in the barrel, but rather to the batch. The finish is extremely long, woody and bitter with a few herbs, roasted flavours and rubber.
Only a few rum lovers can make friends with rum from the closed Caroni distillery, this The Beast Caroni Trinidad Rum is probably only something for very hardcore Caroni fans with a fantastic nose, the rest is for many on the border to the undrinkable and certainly one of the most extreme rum on the market, but that makes this Caroni beast particularly interesting.
Opinions may differ on this extreme Caroni Trinidad rum - an exceptional expression from the closed Caroni distillery and crazy Trinidad rum for all those who just want to have a sniff of rum or need an effective remedy against unloved visitors ;-)!
