A rare and great vintage 1997 16 year old Caroni Single Barrel Fine Trinidad Rum from the German bottler The Whisky Agency, distilled in 1997 and bottled after 16 years of maturation in a Bourbon barrel in the year 2013 without the addition of colourants and chill filtration at 51.6% vol. in an edition of only 223 bottles and was awarded 87 points by Serge at WhiskyFun.
Best known among connoisseurs and lovers of fine whiskies, The Whisky Agency was founded 2008 in Germany by Carsten Ehrlich, who is also the driving force behind the Whisky Fair in Limburg, one of the most prestigious annual whisky gatherings in the world. Their passion is undeniable, and they regularly release high-quality single cask bottlings, often in collaboration with some of the most prestigious whisky bars and retailers. The Whisky Agency s labels include The Perfect Dram, Liquid Library, Private Stock and Liquid Sun.
The Caroni distillery is said to have been founded in 1918, but there are several historical references to distillation having taken place there earlier in the 20th century. In 1936, it became part of the Tate and Lyle company, which used it as a base for expanding its eventually substantial sugar operations in Trinidad. Caroni was an important part of the British Navy s rations, where its famous high-proof heavy rums provided the signature flavour. With the decline of the Trinidadian sugar industry, Tate and Lyle sold a 51% majority stake to the government in 1970 before the company was fully nationalised in 1975. Although the newly formed Caroni (1975) Ltd. was able to supply itself with molasses, it continued to make losses for the next 25 years until the government attempted to minimise its stake by selling 49% of its shares, just enough to retain control. Angostura was the preferred bidder, but a dispute over the value of Caroni s stock cancelled the deal and Caroni was finally closed in the year 2003.
In the end, Angostura acquired the majority of the 18,000 or so Caroni casks in storage, most of which were to be used for blending. These remained in Trinidad, as did a large proportion of the casks that were later acquired by Luca Gargano from Velier in the year 2004. However, a large number of casks from the closed Caroni distillery also found their way to Europe, imported by Bristol Spirits and the Main Rum Company, resulting over the years in a growing number of coveted continent-matured releases from independent bottlers such as this one.
The fine vintage 1997 16 years Caroni Single Barrel Trinidad Rum shines on the nose with aromas of pralines, caramel, milk chocolate, rock sugar, a hint of linoleum and bakelite, dried bananas, a little sandalwood, incense and on the palate with metal polish, grapefruit peel, plastic, liquorice, lapsang souchong tea, diesel oil, capers and cucumber with a long, salty and tarry finish, a captivating Caroni rum!
