A rare and terrific vintage 1998 20 year old Caroni Full Proof Single Cask Heavy Trinidad Rum from the Italian bottler Hidden Spirits and Stefano Cremaschi from famous The Wild Parrot Single Cask Rum series, which is well known among connoisseurs. This fine and exclusive Caroni Full Proof Premium Single Cask Rum was distilled in 1998 and matured for 20 years in an oak cask with the cask number WP98635 before it was bottled without added sugar and colouring in a limited edition in the year 2018 at full proof 63.5% vol. and was only available in a few European countries.
Born in the year 2016 from the collaboration between Hidden Spirits and Stefano Cremaschi, The Wild Parrot is a series of rums selected from the most famous distilleries and bottled from a unique cask at natural cask strenght. Each of the exclusive bottlings from this limited series comes with a decorative bottle label by Italian artist Giulia Ronchetti.
The Caroni distillery is said to have been founded in 1918, but there are several historical references to distillation having taken place there earlier in the 20th century. In 1936, it became part of the Tate and Lyle company, which used it as a base for expanding its eventually substantial sugar operations in Trinidad. Caroni was an important part of the British Navy s rations, where its famous high-proof heavy rums provided the signature flavour. With the decline of the Trinidadian sugar industry, Tate and Lyle sold a 51% majority stake to the government in 1970 before the company was fully nationalised in 1975. Although the newly formed Caroni (1975) Ltd. was able to supply itself with molasses, it continued to make losses for the next 25 years until the government attempted to minimise its stake by selling 49% of its shares, just enough to retain control. Angostura was the preferred bidder, but a dispute over the value of Caroni s stock cancelled the deal and and Caroni was finally closed in 2003 and a true giant of flavour was lost to the world.
This exclusive dark copper coloured Caroni Trinidad single cask rum has strong notes of citrus, dark dark chocolate, wood, white pepper, peppermint and honey on the palate with a long and dry finish.
