A rare old bottling of the Highland Park Capella Special Edition Orkney Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the year 2004. The Highland Park Capella Special Edition Single Malt was bottled in 2004 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Italian Chapel of Orkney in a limited edition of 5.400 bottles at 40.0% vol.
Between the years of 1942 and 1945 Camp 60, on the little island of Lamb Holm on Orkney, was home to approximately 550 Italian prisoners of war. This team worked by day on the construction of the Churchill Barriers, a series of causeways linking the southern islands of Orkney together, but by night they worked on improving their camp. They built concrete paths and gardens, complete with flower beds and vegetable plots, and they even worked to produce a theatre and a recreation hut. But the one thing Camp 60 lacked was a chapel. In late 1943 they were gifted two Nissen huts, joined end to end, and from this they crafted the Italian Chapel, often referred to as the Miracle of Camp 60.
During the years after the war the chapel increasingly became a visitor attraction, and in 1958 a preservation committee was set up. Chiocchetti returned to Orkney in 1960, when he restored some of the paintwork in the Chapel, and again in 1964 with his wife. Eight of the former Italian prisoners returned to Orkney in 1992, fifty years after they were originally brought here, though Chiocchetti was too ill to be with them. Domenico Chiocchetti died on 7. May 1999 in his home village of Moena, aged 89. He did so in the knowledge that his masterpiece will live on as a tribute to his artistry and to the spirit of all those who worked on its construction and preservation.
Highland Park Capella was selected by Fabio, Letizia and Angela Chiocchetti, Domenico s son and daughters. This exceptional variant of Highland Park contains a mix of exquisite, old and very rare whiskies. Capella is rich and full on the nose, with whispers of exotic spices, grapefruit and sandalwood. To taste it is full flavoured, with a smoky palate, soft oak and a heather honey sweetness characteristic of Highland Park. The finish is long and surprisingly sweet.
