The Highland Park Thor Orkney Islands Single Malt Scotch whisky is the 1st of four special bottlings from Highland Park s limited Valhalla Collection, matured for 16 years in selected sherry casks and was bottled in the year 2012 without the addition of colourants and chill-filtration at cask strength 52.1% vol.
Highland Park Thor from the Valhalla Collection, which celebrates the ancient Norse gods, is dedicated to the most legendary and powerful of all the Norse gods. Thor, the son of Odin, the ruler of Asgard, was eagerly worshipped by Viking warriors as the defender of mankind and the gods alike. It is said that Thor could carve valleys out of mountains with a mighty hammer called Mjölnir and that his enemies trembled in fear at the thunderous sound the weapon made. Thor s impulsiveness has been documented in past conquests, most notably in his numerous encounters with Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent and son of the treacherous Loki. According to legend, Thor s work can be seen on the island of Orkney, home of the Highland Park distillery, on the rough-hewn cliffs of Yesnaby on the far western shore. Here, the brooding sea battles endlessly for supremacy against chiselled rocks, resulting in echoes of Thor s divine strength across the land.
Like its namesake, this whisky has a natural strength influenced by the unique environment of the Orkney Islands to create a truly elemental spirit. Distilled where the sea becomes the ocean, Highland Park is a meeting point for the forces of nature. The result is a single malt that exudes balance, complexity and character.
Highland Park Thor shines on the palate with hot gingerbread, vanilla, blackberries, fresh mango, peach and hints of cinnamon. As the bold flavours develop in the mouth, some softer, sweet notes come in and give Thor unexpected complexity and depth, the finish lingers long, fading notes of sweet vanilla and intense spice.
