Macallan Speymalt 1970 41 Years 1st Fill Sherry Cask Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 43.0% Vol. - an absolute outstanding Macallan Highland Single Malt by Gordon and MacPhail!
A exceptional vintage 1970 41 year old Macallan Speymalt Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky with a long maturation in selected 1st fill sherry casks and a beautiful dark amber colour, bottled on 20th December 2011 by Gordon and MacPhail in the Speymalt range as a limited edition at 43.0% vol. Gordon and MacPhail is the only independent bottler other than the distillery that still has casks of Macallan of this age.
This 1970 vintage is a superbly aged and now rare Macallan Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky with particularly pronounced sherry notes, highly aromatic with clove powder, incense and fig notes, backed by cocoa, Bolivar cigar and molasses.
A great Macallan Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky and exceptionally old Macallan - a bottling of the absolute superlative class for connoisseurs, the discerning whisky collector and lovers of exquisite Scotch whiskies!
Whisky Advocate: On more familiar ground with this Gordon and MacPhail bottling of one of Speyside's most iconic single malts, this is Macallan in full-on sherried form. Highly aromatic with powdered clove, hints of incense and fig, behind which is cacao, Bolivar cigar, and molasses. The palate has immediate smoke and surprisingly gentle tannins -- the inherent oiliness of the spirit keeping any grip at bay. Very long, leathery, prune-like (think armagnac), and dense.
A classic after-dinner mouth-filler.
Aged entirely in first-fill sherry casks, this is quite possibly the best Macallan I've ever tasted. The concentration of sherry is absolutely unreal. It's almost impossible to tell where the sherry ends and the whisky begins - it all gets lost in a seamless flavor of rich toffee, syrup, and caramel. I have to believe that anyone who is willing to pay the price will get exactly what they expect from this bottle. It tastes expensive, unlike so many pricier malts that get you on rarity or collectibility only.
