William Larue Weller is probably one of the best-known American bourbon whiskey brands, which originally belonged to the Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company, but has changed hands several times over the past three decades and today, like Buffalo Trace, belongs to the Sazerac Company and is also produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Stitzel Distillery was based in Louisville, Kentucky and produced whiskey for the Weller family's wholesale business, but was later bought out by them and thus became the Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company. During Prohibition, the company was under the supervision of the U.S. government and produced alcohol for medicinal purposes. Stitzel manufactured brands such as W.L. Weller, Cabin Still, Rebell Yell, Old Fitzgerald and Old Rip van Winkle. Over the years, however, these brands passed into the possession of various owners. After the sale in 1972 and a few confused years, the distillery closed its doors forever in the year 1992. The mashbill for the bourbon whiskeys under the Weller brand contains predominantly corn as a base and unlike most other bourbons, in which rye plays a decisive role, Weller relies on the use of wheat as a second grain. Named after William Larue Weller, a well-known bourbon distiller in the early years of the state of Kentucky, it was William Larue Weller who was the first to replace the then common rye with wheat in the mashbill for his bourbon whiskey and allegedly produced his first wheated bourbon in 1849. Today, W.L. Weller bourbons are among the best-known wheated bourbons on the market. The high proportion of wheat in the mash gives the whiskeys a soft and particularly fruity flavour that lovers of mild bourbons really appreciate.
