This very rare 17-year-old handmade Very Olde St. Nick Kentucky Straigth Bourbon Whiskey with the bordeaux-coloured wax capsule and a beautiful dark amber colour comes from the limited Rare Bourbon series and was bottled from cask lot no. M137 without the addition of colourants and chill-filtration at 45.0% vol. / 90 proof. The Olde St. Nick Cask Lot No. M137 Handmade Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the very early bottlings from the Olde St. Nick Distillery in Bardstown and therefore contains bourbon whiskey that was produced by Julian Van Winkle III in his Old Commonwealth bottling facility or Kentucky Bourbon Distillers in the old Heaven Hill distillery in the late 1970s / early 1980s for the Japanese market.
Olde St. Nick is a whiskey label under which bottlings from Julian Van Winkle and KBD/Willett were bottled and marketed exclusively for the Japanese export market. At that time, the Japanese market was much more interested in rare and old bourbon and rye whiskeys and the demand was greater than in the USA. These exquisite bourbon and rye whiskeys came from the same sources as the legendary old Willett, Black Maple Hill and Stitzel Weller bottlings of the time.
In response to a question about Very Olde St. Nick whiskey, Julian Van Winkle gave the following answer on Straight Bourbon in 2000: Olde St. Nick was bottled by Even Kulsveen in Bardstown. He buys his whiskey from Heaven Hill. The label was created by a lady in California a few years ago who sells my whisky in Japan. I used to actually bottle these whiskeys for her and they were shipped to Japan. But years ago I didn t have as much older whiskey as I needed, so she switched to Evan Kulsveen, who had the Heaven Hill supply.
When KBD recommissioned the distillery at Willett in 2012, they began sourcing fewer casks from elsewhere and reserving the best casks for their own Willett Family Reserve label. Production of Very Olde St Nick virtually ceased and was moved to California, where some of the Stitzel-Weller casks were bottled by Frank-Lin Distillers.
Only very few bottles of this exceptional 17 Years Very Olde St. Nick Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey have found their way to Europe and even at the special auctions of Bonhams, Krüger and Christies, this first-class bourbon was almost impossible to find. A special piece of whiskey history and a rare expression for connoisseurs, discerning whiskey collectors and lovers of fine old bourbon whiskeys!
