The special and limited single barrel Boss Hog editions are special experiments with wood and finishing from the small Whistle Pig Farm in Vermont and were created under the direction of former Maker s Mark master distiller Dave Pickerell.

The Whistlepig LapuLapu s Pacific is also the sequel to The Boss Hog VII: Magellan s Atlantic, which was released in 2020. The Boss Hog VIII continues the journey across the Pacific, offering a straight rye whiskey matured for 14 years in new American oak, followed by a double finish in heavily toasted barrels previously used to store Philippine rum in small batches and on a single island. The Boss Hog VIII is inspired by the Philippines, where Magellan met his fate at the hands of the Filipino hero LapuLapu in the Battle of Mactan. Magellan s voyage ended in the Philippines on 27th April 1521, when the victory of the natives drove away the Spanish fleet. The Philippine rum barrels for The Boss Hog VIII come from a small island south-west of Cebu, where the battle took place. They had previously stored rum for seven to ten years.
The exquisite rye whiskey was first given a long finish in 7-year-old Philippine rum barrels, followed by a shorter finish in 10-year-old Philippine rum barrels. The older rum is darker and stronger, so the barrels need less time to impart notes to the whiskey.
On the nose, the Whistlepic Lapulapu s Pacific Rye Whiskey presents strong vanilla flavours with delicate tropical notes such as ripe bananas, freshly picked lemons and molasses. The palate is freshly ground cinnamon with citrus peel, caramel and light toffee notes and the finish is characterised by tanned leather, fine brown sugar, nutmeg and allspice with a lingering black pepper rye spice.
