Willett is a whiskey distillery from Bardstown, Kentucky. It belongs to the Willett/Kulsveen family, which has been based in Bardstown for several centuries. The Willett distillery first opened its doors in the year 1936, shortly after the end of prohibition. It produced high-quality bourbon and rye whiskey and Willett was able to successfully establish itself on the market with its products outside the region around the distillery. In the 1970s, demand for bourbon whiskey fell sharply, which is why the distillery finally had to cease operations due to the bourbon crisis in the 1980s and was bought by Martha Willett s husband, the successful entrepreneur Even Kulsveen. Kulsveen continued to have his company, Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, produce whiskey according to the original Willett recipe and then mature and bottle it at the actual distillery in Bardstown. The Willett/Kulsveen family worked as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers in the whiskey wholesale business until 2012, when they reopened a new distillery for bourbon whiskey and rye whiskey in the old location and renamed themselves Willet Distilling Company.
Willett is now one of the most renowned American whiskey producers with its bottlings and has made a name for itself among lovers and connoisseurs of bourbon and rye whiskeys. The rare old bottlings from the distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, in particular, are now sought-after collector s items, just like the whiskeys from Pappy Van Winkle, George T. Stagg or William Larue Weller, and the now extremely rare bourbon and rye whiskeys fetch exorbitantly high prices at special auctions organised by Bonhams, Kruger or Christie s, with prices continuing to rise.
